This song has been echoing in my heart for days. It has become more than a melody. It is my prayer. The words were penned by Phillip P. Bliss in 1873. Their commitment to surrender and hunger to look more like Jesus is timeless. They are the cry of a heart that longs for more. God’s heart is always open to a heart that aches for more of Him. Will you sing and pray with me?
More holiness give me, More strivings within,
More patience in suffering, More sorrow for sin,
More faith in my Savior, More sense of His care,
More joy in His service, More purpose in prayer.
More purity give me, More strength to o’ercome,
More freedom from earth-stains, More longings for home;
More fit for the kingdom, More useful I’d be,
More blessed and holy, More, Savior, like Thee.
My Jesus Resolution today is to pray for more. The world pushes me to want more – more stuff, more money, more power, more importance, and more of the spotlight. God wants us to long for more as well – more grace, more holiness, more joy, more of Him. The world’s kind of “more” will eventually leave me empty, used up, and disillusioned. God’s more will satisfy my soul with a richness and intensity beyond my imagination. Psalm 145:19a says, “He fulfills the desire of those who fear him.” Set your heart to desiring more of God and get ready to stand in wonder.
